“You have to be faster!”
“I am going fast!”
“Then why can’t you keep up, huh?!”
The mix of audible laughter of children filled the air. An empty space occupied by just the two of them. Usually this sound was accompanied by smiling families, fond memories, and talk of bright futures. There should have been smiling faces of parents watching their children play as the sun set along the horizon of tall, lush green trees. Calls coming from them saying ‘Come on dear, it’s time to go home’. But the words didn’t come. The eyes on them were never there. The sun was simply setting on the two of them; alone. Much like the little boy whose name meant the very same thing.
No one was there to miss them. Even the two of them together didn’t amount to much or stand a chance of anything in their current state. They barely even knew each other. But they were family. The only family that each other had in these briefest of moments once in a blue moon. Fleeting moments of happiness that they could never tell anyone about. Not that anyone cared, per se, though the care would be of how it would look. Esteemed members of the Hyuuga clan playing, not training. Having fun being children rather than having fun learning prestige. Those who should remain in the shadows being out in the sun.
“We need to get going. I don’t want your mother to come down too hard on you,” the little boy started, making sure to tighten the laces on his shoes before standing to stretch; arms reaching up into the sky as if reaching for the freedom he didn’t have. He was always seemingly chasing something so far out of his reach.
The little girl nodded, sighing to herself and looking back in another direction; likely to that of her home. “Will you be okay?”, she asked as she made sure she was well put together and not disheveled looking. “My sister says your dad is very strict and rigid despite not being anywhere near next in line as heir–”
“That doesn’t matter. He still wants perfection…” The boy seemed to be lost for a moment. Despite standing right in front of her, his eyes didn’t have the spark they normally did. He was gone, albeit briefly, before smiling widely and waving. “Well, goodbye!”
“You mean see you later! See you, Yuhi!”
“...Yeah. See you, Kohana!”
——
“Kohana. Kohana? Lady Kohana?!”
Kohana snapped out of it, seemingly lost in thought for a moment outside of a home she had only ever passed by, never once inside. Clearing her throat, she nodded and moved in closer to the Hyuuga man beside her who had been keeping an eye on the home alongside a member of the ANBU. “Er, yes, sorry about that. I was lost in thought for a moment on the best way to approach this.”
“Ah,” he eyed her warily for a moment before mentally shrugging off the odd behavior and continuing. “As I was saying, the target has three young women held hostage inside. All of which are civilians who also happen to be from other countries; or rather from families who were displaced back during the war and found shelter here. The target likely thinks they are sleeper agent families. Especially after the recent events within the com–”
“Yes, I do not need you to remind me what has gone on within my own family.”
The Hyuuga male stiffened for a moment before nodding. “My apologies ma’am. The target is favoring the back of the home, not really coming to the front. Likely afraid of a frontal rescue. Thanks to my ANBU friend here, our chakra signatures have been masked so the target doesn’t know we’re here.” He paused, eyeing the home for a moment. “He isn’t harming the girls from what I can tell. Lady Kohana, how will you deal with the targe–”
“His name is Yuhi. His actions are terrible but that doesn’t suddenly strip him of his identity. I’m going through the front.”
“Lady Kohana no! He’ll see you coming and the ANBU can’t mas–”
“It’ll be alright.”
Without entertaining the Hyuuga male again while also noting, but ignoring, the fact that the ANBU beside them began to whisper into his mask to likely report the change in plans and the upset to the stealth of the mission already. She didn’t care though. Leaping from the treetops, she landed and casually but cautiously made her way to the front gate. Pausing at the front, her eyes hardened as the veins around her eyes began to bulge. He was there, by the front door, watching her watching him. She stepped forward again and opened the gate to take a step into the front yard. Still nothing.
Nodding slowly, she kept her hands by her side as she walked to the front door slowly. Still she watched him watch her watching him until she was right there next to him; only separated by the wood of the door in front of her. While her breath was calm and controlled, she could hear the uneven heaviness of his breath on the other side. She stood there, waiting. Neither of them moved to open the door. A minute passed disguised as an eternity until finally the chakra pooling at his eyes dispersed. Her lips twitched into a small smile as she too disengaged her Byakugan and put a hand on the doorknob and opened the door to let herself in and close the door behind her.
“Hello Yuhi.”
