When the comforts of civilization begin to dull our senses, we must never forget that in the beginning, there was war. And war. And more war. Long before there were empires, there were humans consumed with greed and the hunger for power. Resources, territories, information—these were the forms of sustenance upon which we preyed. Today, we call such habits vices. Oh, how arrogant we have become! Are we not still impelled by those primordial emotions? Is the advent of war so far-fetched? But alas, for you to truly understand, we must dive deeper into this land’s half-forgotten past.
There was a time when might was the only law that humankind knew. Fearsome clans roamed throughout the land, seeking amenable grounds within which they could take root and opposing forces against whom they could test their mettle. Given the irregularity of nature’s bounty, certain regions appealed more than others, and dominion over such coveted territories became the spark that ignited the earliest inter-clan wars. These fierce, internecine affairs tended to conclude only when one side had decimated their competition into oblivion, and many clans of story were rendered extinct during this period.
The victors of war, having claimed their territories, often made truces with surrounding locals, offering protection in exchange for access to the yields of agriculture. Over time, certain communities emerged as more dominant than others, either due to numbers or sheer talent, and their rapid expansion would force smaller, neighboring communities to either collapse into their fold or be devastated. When the dust settled, humankind found itself divided into the five major territories that we are familiar with today. And was the bloodshed over? With our lands obtained and our bellies filled, were we finally content?

A golden branch with jaded leaves.
Another beautiful day in the lively forest that sheltered Konohagakure from the world. The sun beaming down gently to warm the skin of all underneath her embrace, a cool breeze blowing through every so often to accompany her touch. A perfect day for the jounin to find something productive to do... though she did that every day. This time, however, she was going to be potentially starting a journey she wasn't sure she was cut out for.
Not because she was incapable, no, but because she was a bit inexperienced. Today was Kiyomi's first day taking the true initiative to form her very own squad, and what better place to start than the training fields?
Kiyomi's lithe frame was draped in a pastel pink kimono adorned with a single jade dragon wrapping the torso, similar to her various assortment of the same 'casual wear' the woman sported. She couldn't help it if she liked to look nice on the rare occasion days off. Her feet walked along the forest floor with two toothed geta keeping them elevated above the dirk and foliage, her hair straightened and falling down her spine to reach her lower back; diamond studs resting in her lobes refracting the light from above along the trees as she walked.
Dancing with rainbow tint from their effulgent nature.
It wasn't until she was about to break through the tree line into the fields that she could hear what could only be the sounds of an elemental technique being honed to perfection by one of her fellow shinobi. The youthful voice accompanying the jutsu suggested that she was dealing with a genin or an exceptionally gifted chunin, though she couldn't be sure and so in just a mere moment the jounin disappeared from the path she walked. Appearing in a tall tree that gave her a better view of the situation below her, silent and watchful the woman would peer at the young woman below, hawking her every movement.
"Let's she what she can do..." Kiyomi thought to herself as her standing frame slowing moved into a dainty crouch, careful not to dirty her clothing while she waited for the girls next move.

Kaori smiles with pride as she completes one of her techniques, not entirely aware of her surroundings, or who might be watching. It even seemed like she was proud enough to actually desire being watched. She wore her two-tone hair down, as well as her more dark outfit, which gave off a much more muted look than if she'd been out on the town, though with part of her hair a dark purplish color and the other side and two stripes a bright bleached blonde, she was still quite eye-catching. Her dark gray hoodie hung somewhat loose off her shoulders, and the fitted crop top with dark mesh on her torso left a surprising amount of skin exposed. Her dark nin-shoes and her matching shorts gave off an air of a fashionista that was trying to downplay her stylishness.
"Like, all right! This is, like, how elemental ninjutsu should be done!"
Kaori performs a set of four handseals in less than a second, with a quickness that might surprise someone that hadn't seen her use ninjutsu before, and a swarm of bright orange fireballs, about the size of shuriken, appear on either side of her, with three on her left and two on her right. She's only facing off against a training dummy, at a range of 10 meters, with its sandbag body held up by a simple wooden stake. Instead of simply sending off the flaming orbs directly at the dummy, however, she then performs another rapid set of 9 handseals, though the sheer number of them makes it seem a bit longer, and she slams both hands to the ground. Her Doton chakra then causes two plates of rock to rise up, though oddly, they're mostly behind the training dummy, smashing into one another above its head. Someone familiar with Doton techniques would likely recognize the second technique as the Rock Plate Coffin, though it seemed to have been done with something else in mind.
Indeed, instead of causing the stone plates to push into one another and crush the training dummy, she lifts her hands from the dirt and claps her hands together in one final handseal, focusing on the training dummy trapped between the stone plates as the five orbs rush in to attack the sandbag body, exploding in a blast of heat and crumbling stone, seemingly using the rock as a method of containing the flaming blasts and focusing their heat and concussive force back onto the hanging effigy. Kaori lets out a long, pleased whistle while she dusts her hands off one another, watching the training dummy burn to a crisp.
"Like, I'm glad I don't have to, like, hold back on these things? They can just, like, take whatever I dish out? They can't, like, die, y'know?"
She blows a bubble of bright pink gum from between her lips, then pops it and pulls it back in artlessly, watching the training dummy smolder to ash with her hands in the pockets of her hoodie.
You tried you Gladius piece of shit. How does my dick taste?

A golden branch with jaded leaves.
Cerulean gems locked onto the girl who was seemingly talking to herself in the midst of whatever she was attempting to do. Kiyomi couldn't blame her for the habit that plenty of shinobi shared, but she did use it as a chance to listen in and kind of feel the girl out; her accent giving off an air of posh with a mixture of effervescent. Most likely a bubbly girl from what she could tell so far, but that didn't coincide with the power she displayed soon after.
First she was launching off a katon technique, her hands moving rather quickly to form the demon lantern technique, quickly forming the rock plate coffin to attempt to pin them before blasting off at the dummy. The entire time, Kiyomi's mind calculated the speed of her movements, her stance, the chakra control or lack there of, and the attention to detail in the young woman's assault. It only took but a moment for her to deduce that she was a genin, a fresh one at that, but she was talented and well renowned by her peers...
How could she have guessed that? Because that was her at what seemed to be an entire lifetime ago, something that caused her to almost smirk at the notion. The older woman had come to the training grounds in search of a sign that maybe there would be three shinobi to catch her eye and so far there was already one, but she needed to see more before she was convinced. While impressive that she could use two different elemental natures so quickly in her career, the jounin knew this world wasn't kind to those who relied on mere power alone.
Fortunately for this little one, if her raw power was stone, Kiyomi herself could be considered a master sculptor. So without a word, a movement, a single sound she continued to wait for the girl to continue her training before she would introduce herself... it wasn't often someone trained with the same two elements she wound up using in her genin career. It was almost like perfect symmetry to her own early career, and it inspired hope in her heart once more to push forward.

Kaori watches the training dummy smolder for a while before she notices someone running up to her, and she gives the older man a grin. Almost on reflex, she draws a pen from her hoodie's pocket, calling out to him before he reaches her.
"Omigawd, you must be, like, one of my fans!~ Of course I'll, like, give you my autograph, swee-!"
She's interrupted by the larger man telling her that she will need to clear off the site of now previous training dummy, and that this particular training dummy she'd been using hadn't actually been rated for ninjutsu training; it had been a dummy meant entirely for training taijutsu techniques, and was therefore incapable of handling serious ninjutsu techniques. Kaori's glowing smile was quickly replaced with a much deeper frown, almost more angry at having her kind-hearted offer of an autograph ignored than for being told off about destroying Konoha property through negligence.
"Ugh, RUDE! What-ever! If you want me to clean up this mess, just watch me!"
Immediately after telling the man off, she turns back towards where the training dummy had been, but was now a pile of hot ash. She performs another rapid set of handseals before letting loose a jet of high pressure water from her mouth, using its high power to both out out the smoldering pile and also to wash it away. Gradually, after several seconds, the stone plates themselves drop as well, having had the ground they were sitting atop turned to muddy slush by her water technique. Once done, she turns back around to yell at the poor worker once more.
"Like, now look what you did! I had to, like, spit out my gum because of you! Like, get out of my face!"
With a wave of her hand, she "dismisses" him, though he just stands there staring at the uppity Genin for a while, clearly confused by the interaction before he leaves of his own accord.
You tried you Gladius piece of shit. How does my dick taste?

A golden branch with jaded leaves.
The black smoke that rose from what used to be a training dummy flowed gently through the air, carrying a charred smell to her nostrils and anyone else in the area. Prompting someone to approach her to which Kaori offered her autograph, causing Kiyomi's own face to grimace in secondhand embarrassment at the young woman's sense of self worth. So she was talented but delusional? That was a bit of a stray from the woman's own standing but she could understand the enhanced sense of importance constant praise could bring. It made her smirk a bit, holding back a bit of a chuckle when he dismissed her promptly.
While she had indeed been attacking the wrong dummy, Kiyomi didn't stop her and in fact used it as a measure of her own evaluation. So far she had a basic understanding of who she was dealing with, an arrogant girl with talent who wasn't always the most observant but seemed to be a quick thinker, an interesting mix for a young kunoichi. The potential to go any direction in her career, it was all so very thrilling to think about, but those thoughts didn't last; cut off by the presence of the girl now using a suiton technique.
"Fire, earth AND water style. . .? Interesting." She spoke internally, watching the girl turn a pile of ash into a pool of muck from the intensity of her ninjutsu. Without so much as a middle finger to the face the girl would shoo him off and cause Kiyomi to raise an eyebrow and finally begin to move to her full height on the tree branch she used as a seat. The sun glistening off her smooth skin as she dusted the back of her garb off, standing at her full stature while stretching her arms over her head and sighing.
"You should be a nicer to people like him," Without waiting a single second, she was gracefully taking flight. Twirling through the air with the an unmatched grace before landing in a crouch in front of the young woman, standing now to look down at her and into her eyes. Getting a better sense of her features. A pretty girl, bi-colored hair, a fit frame and eyes that had an awareness hidden away behind them; as if she was playing a character and careful not to break in front of others.
All too familiar.
"They're the best of us, after all." She spoke with a knowing tone without being condescending to the youth before her, instead offering a small extension of her hand to greet the other. The wind blowing by gently, prompting her kimono to dance effervescently at the bottom and along her billowing sleeves, with hazel blue eyes retaining their perceptive stare at the girl.

Kaori Shikiri
━━━━━━━━━━━━━
THE UPSTART ━━━━━━━━━
Kaori is observing her nails now after having been so rude and dismissive of the worker of the training field, but she actually didn't care; while her ditzy air-headed persona really was an act, she figured that the man was working at the training field not because he was so inclined, but because he wasn't capable of performing any of the ninja arts effectively. She certainly believed he wasn't capable of performing ninjutsu the way she could. But she felt happy for him internally, that even someone like him was able to be a productive member of society. She looks up from her nails and starts looking around to see if she can find one of the more appropriate training dummies, if for no other reason than to avoid another similar confrontation, or worse, actually getting in trouble enough to disappoint her parents. She might have been pretty rebellious, but getting her parents involved would just make her life even more annoying than it already was, and she'd likely have to deal with another stern talking to that she'd become quite adept at avoiding. It's because she's looking around that she's even more surprised to hear another voice, telling her that she should be nicer to people like him. Her eyes follow the voice upwards just in time to see a woman floating towards her. Kaori can't actually see her at first, with the sun in her eyes, so she can't even see her face at first.
"Like, what the hell?"
Then the woman floats down right in front of her, making Kaori blink in surprise as she's now looking directly into the other woman's eyes, and with a quick half-step back, she's actually able to see the facial features of one Kiyomi Tenma, known to some as The Jade Dragoness. Kaori's cheeks turn a little more pink as she realizes the beauty of the older woman in front of her, but she notices her feelings becoming far more platonic when the Jounin states that people like the training field handler are "the best of us".
The best of you, maybe.
The thought comes unbidden to her mind, but she thankfully doesn't show the disdain in her head outwardly on her face. Instead, she follows up immediately with an introduction of herself, careful not to let on that she actually knows exactly who Kiyomi Tenma is. Kaori actually doesn't realize that Kiyomi herself might be aware that her ditzy bimbo persona is a facade that she puts on to make others underestimate her.
"I'm, like, Kaori Shikiri? Yeah, I bet it's, like, a pleasure for you?"
Although her vocal inflection rises at the end of the sentence like it's a question, the context makes it clear that it's a statement of fact and not really a query for Kiyomi to answer. Although, Kaori has started realizing that speaking like that, almost every sentence rising in inflection, is even annoying her, so she considers maybe dropping it in the future.

A golden branch with jaded leaves.
Her landing was enough to seemingly startle, causing her to blush a bit from the short distance between them while the older woman continued to observe her. Taking the hand of the girl as she introduced herself as Kaori Shikiri, Kiyomi would offer a small chuckle at the girls statement with an odd inflection. The Jade Dragoness couldn't quite place her accent from any place she'd particularly been but it sounded a bit posh, maybe the girl was from a well off family at some point and it just stuck? Or maybe it all was just an act. . .
"Its always a pleasure to make the acquaintance of fine potential Konoha shinobi." The older woman reiterated before turning slowly to the training dummy, or rather what was left of it. A small smirk forming on her face before she turned back to Kaori and stepped back a bit to give them both a view of her fine work. A hand raising to her chin as if pondering while she spoke once more, a gentle tone unlike the one she usually took with others as she found no need to antagonize the girl before her.
"You're very talented from what I've seen. Definitely a step above the others in your age range. . . very impressive."
Kiyomi would then begin to walk a bit more and point to the location of the ninjutsu training dummies, an inviting stance as if directing the girl to where she needed to go. If she was going to truly unleash her power the jounin wanted to see first hand what she could really do when she wasn't completely ruining the villages equipment, and maybe the older woman might even participate in some of the action.

Kaori Shikiri
━━━━━━━━━━━━━
THE UPSTART ━━━━━━━━━
Kaori wasn't all that surprised that Kiyomi would be taking an interest in her; after all, she was likely the most accomplished genin that the Academy had produced so far, or at least that's what her parents and the academy teachers had told her. Still, she's given even more praise from Kiyomi, a famous Jounin in Konoha, so her pride was only bolstered, despite being talked down about how she had treated that worker for the training grounds. She then watches the other woman walk a bit and then point to the location of the training dummies specifically for ninjutsu, and is given an option to show what she can really do. A chance to show off? How could Kaori say no to that?
"Like, totally! You ain't, like, seen nothing yet!"
Kaori makes her way to the more sturdy training dummies, these being made of harder stuff in order to compensate for the more varied destructive power of ninjutsu techniques, compared to the rather more limited type of damage that can be done with taijutsu techniques exclusively. On the walk up there, she considers what else she should show her ability to use, but fire is pretty often her most focused offensive element. She starts off before they even set off for the training dummies, performing three handseals for the Black Clouds technique, and then causing a mist of black liquid to rise from her skin and coalesce into the sky to form dark rain clouds. Once the sky is nearly full of clouds, she finds herself rather close to the ninjutsu training dummy, and she uses a series of three handseals before slamming both palms to the ground, utilizing Doro Gaeshi in order to bring up an earth wall. However, instead of directly in front of herself as the technique is often used, typically defensively, she instead causes the wall of earth to spring up directly behind the puppet. Once that's done, the black oil starts to fall from the sky, pelting the entire area that the puppet is in and eventually soaking the puppet with black oil before Kaori uses another set of six handseals, and from her squatting position, she brings a hand up to form a ring directly in front of her mouth to blast the oily puppet with a stream of magnificent fire that seems to cover both the training dummy and even the earth wall behind it with intense flames, with the earth wall crumbling down after the fireball hits it, ensuring nothing behind the wall gets burned, either.
"Hah. It's just a puppet, after all, it'd be way more impressive if I could do that to another ninja."
Kaori doesn't realize she's dropped the odd and somewhat annoying inflection until after she's spoken, and she frowns at herself for dropping it so quickly after a bit of a distraction like that.
You tried you Gladius piece of shit. How does my dick taste?

A golden branch with jaded leaves.
The twinkle in the eye of the genin girl showed exactly what Kiyomi suspected. She did enjoy being praised for her talent despite this little act she was putting on, and it was easy to see that she was working hard to achieve what she needed to succeed. A better grasp of her immense power, something else Kiyomi found herself relating to while her features shifted to offer a gentle smirk at Kaori acceptance. Making sure to stay a bit behind the younger shinobi who was about to demonstrate her power.
It only took a few moments for the girl to first begin her assault with the Black Clouds technique, one the older woman was very familiar with, seeping from the genins form. Amassing above them to create thick, dark clouds that would quickly burst to rain down onto the training dummy before them; all the while her hands formed more seals. First to sprout a wall of earth behind the target and then another set to ignite the oil that rained down within her sights, prompting a large explosive of intense heat and flame.
As one might expect from the technique.
Nodding slowly and offering a few slow claps at Kaori after the flamboyant display of her jutsu mastery, Kiyomi would raise an eyebrow while peering to the girl in question. Her response good hearted in nature despite the sarcasm she present with each syllable of the word, as if emphasizing the point that her silly accent wasn't hiding who she really was to her. She was an excellent reader of people, and she knew a Freudian slip when she heard one.
"It, like, totally would." Followed by a bit of silence to put that emphasis before she giggled a bit at the situation and moved closer to the young woman as to seemingly maintain confidentiality. Everyone was different and every shinobi used different tactics to throw their enemies off, so she didn't see the harm in the girl keeping her accent for other people. But around her she would prefer to experience Kaori in her authentic state.
"Look, I get why you do that silly voice when others are around. . . but lets start our friendship off being our true selves, yea?"
It was more so an offer than a command or anything of that nature, and she even kept her tone as gentle as she'd become accustomed to lately. Sure she wasn't opposed to being her raw, uncut self, but she'd learned to become someone else for those around her. A beacon of hope.
"Though I must say, your timing and technique are quite lovely. I see a bright future in you, Kaori-chan, but are you willing to do what it takes to attain that future is the ultimate question. I wonder. . ." Her words trailed off as she began to think to herself aloud, all while observing the young woman with inquisitive eyes.
